International Criminal Law

This course is part of the UBC Future Global Leaders On-Campus program for high school students ages 15–18.

Explore the origins of modern international criminal law, with a particular focus on “genocide” and “crimes against humanity”, and their impact on current directions in law, policy and culture. This includes looking at the trial of Nazi leaders at the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg after the Second World War and its impact on current events including the war in Ukraine.

The course also includes a mock trial in which students are divided into two groups: the prosecution and the defense. Prosecuting and defense attorneys research the indictment and the background of the accused and develop and present the case for the prosecution and the defense respectively. There will be recognition for the best overall team effort and the best individual effort.

This course appeals to anyone interested in human rights, international relations, current world events, political science and law.

Dr. ROBERT FARKASCH, PhD, is a Faculty lecturer in the Political Science Department at UBC, where he teaches international political economy, international relations and terrorism studies. He received his doctorate in political science from York University, master’s degree in international political economy from the Norman Paterson School for International Affairs and bachelor’s degree (hons) in economics and psychology.
