Introduction to Engineering

This course is part of the UBC Future Global Leaders On-Campus program for high school students ages 15–18.

Learn about the profession of engineering, and the disciplines of chemical, civil, computer, electrical, environmental and mechanical engineering. Prepare for success by practising and developing key skills in technical problem solving and engineering design, ethical decision-making, teamwork and communicating to diverse audiences.

This course is ideal if you’re interested in engineering, architecture or applied science.

Note: students need to have completed Grade 10 to fully benefit from this course.

There are different instructors for the different sessions for this course:

Dr. S. SOROUSH NASSERI is a biomedical engineer and researcher at the UBC School of Biomedical Engineering. Soroush's research focused on developing tools for the application of 3-D cell cultures for development and discovery of novel drugs.

Dr. EHSAN BANAYAN ESFAHANI, PhD, is a lecturer and postdoctoral research fellow at the University of British Columbia. He has taught introductory courses on chemical, biological, and environmental engineering and was a university mentor for the Verna J. Kirkness Education Foundation. Dr. Esfahani worked as a chemical and environmental engineer before joining UBC.

FATEMEH ASADI ZEIDABADI is a PhD candidate in the department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of British Columbia. Fatemeh’s specialization is the development and evaluation of innovative technologies for removing emerging contaminants from water. She has taught introductory courses on chemical, biological, and environmental engineering and has mentored UBC and visiting undergraduate students.

Course Format

This course is held on the UBC Vancouver campus. You attend class in-person 9am–12pm, Monday through Friday. After lunch, you attend university preparation workshops and participate in group activities on campus from 1:30–3pm.

After you add the course to your cart, you’re asked to complete your registration by creating a new account or logging in. If you are a parent, guardian or other adult registering for the first time please create the account in the name of the high school student attending UBC Future Global Leaders, not in your name.

To register, click “Open all” under Available Sessions, select the applicable Type under Fees / Tuition. You can pay a CAD$500 now or pay in full. Select “Scheduled Payment” if you wish to pay a CAD$500 deposit now and the balance later. We will automatically process the balance owing 30 days before the course start date for the Residence option and seven days before the course start date for the Commuter option. Do not select Scheduled Payment if you wish to pay in full now.
