This course is part of the UBC Future Global Leaders On-Campus program for high school students ages 15–18.
Since the 9/11 attacks in New York, on September 20, 2001, there have been thousands of terrorist attacks and the politics of terrorism continues to be a dominant theme in global discourse.
In this course, we examine the politics of terrorism, including terrorist groups and individuals, terrorist origins, goals, and ideologies through the medium of lecture, discussion and film. Course work includes examining the structure and dynamics of terrorism along with terrorist weapons, strategies and tactics, the hot spots in which terrorists operate and their use of the media.
We also review definitions and typologies of terrorism, analyze specific actions in context, and discuss intelligence concepts and components, as we seek to better understand the politics of terrorism.
This course appeals to anyone interested in political science, politics, international relations and current world events.
Dr. ROBERT FARKASCH, PhD, is a Faculty lecturer in the Political Science Department at UBC, where he teaches international political economy, international relations and terrorism studies. He received his doctorate in political science from York University, master’s degree in international political economy from the Norman Paterson School for International Affairs and bachelor’s degree (hons) in economics and psychology.
