Understanding Intersectionality and Identity

This course explores the meaning of intersectionality, and solutions for respectfully engaging with all members of our communities.

Understand the complexity, range and depth of intersectionality by first paying attention to your identity, then considering others’ narratives which are generated at the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, religious identity and ethnicity, among other social identities.

Explore how systems of oppression affect individuals and communities at these intersections. Examine changes that need to happen to shift our one-dimensional approach to these systemic issues that better reflect individuals’ and communities’ nuanced needs.

This course can be applied to the UBC Certificate in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and UBC Micro-certificate in Anti-Racism.
